Hip Replacement in Young Patients: Why Can It Be Needed?
Hip replacement is often associated with older adults, but younger patients can also develop severe hip joint damage that may eventually require replacement. Conditions such as avascular necrosis (AVN), developmental hip disorders, previous fractures or trauma, inflammatory arthritis, Perthes disease, and certain genetic or metabolic conditions can damage the hip at a younger age. Long-term or high-dose steroid use and excessive alcohol consumption can also increase the risk of AVN. Persistent hip or groin pain, stiffness, reduced movement, or difficulty walking should not be ignored, especially when symptoms interfere with daily activities.

While not every cause of hip damage can be prevented, early attention can help protect joint health. Using steroids only when medically necessary and under supervision, maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, protecting the hips during sports and high-risk activities, and managing underlying medical conditions are important steps. Early diagnosis is particularly valuable in younger patients, as some hip conditions may have treatment options aimed at preserving the natural joint before significant damage occurs. When pain and stiffness continue despite appropriate non-surgical treatment and the joint is severely damaged, hip replacement may be considered based on the individual’s condition, age, activity level and overall health.

At Shivam Advanced Ortho Care, the focus is on providing a detailed evaluation and an individualized treatment plan for every patient. Under the guidance of Dr. Amardeep MR, patients can receive appropriate clinical assessment, advanced imaging when required, discussion of hip-preservation options where suitable, and expert guidance when hip replacement becomes necessary. The goal is not simply to treat hip pain, but to help patients restore mobility, return to meaningful daily activities, and maintain an active lifestyle with appropriate long-term care and follow-up. Don’t let persistent hip pain limit your future—early evaluation can make a difference.
